Evicted

'Leonard' was recently evicted from his apartment. It wasn't due to his lack of paying rent though, as a local agency pays for that, it was because of a confrontation he had with a couple of his neighbors.
One of the symptoms of 'Leonard's' mental illness involves him putting together words that don't follow normal patterns of grammar, but whose sounds often rhyme. He... Read More

Hope

Next week 'Elizabeth' has her court date to appeal the rejection of her SSI application. Considering the rejection was due to her not following up with the doctor's appointments required by the Social Security Administration and not a denial based on the severity or lack thereof of her disability, it is highly likely that now that she has proof from doctor's of her... An evaluation and fish

'Elizabeth' has been waiting for some time now to get her SSI reinstated. According to her, its been almost three years since she started the process of re-applying for SSI. Her benefits were stopped in the first place, because she went to prison for a couple of years. Upon her release she was able to receive General Assistance, but that was set up as a temporary fix,... Starred Review.
Scurrying back to his office one day, Lopez, a columnist for the L.A. Times, is stopped short by the ethereal strains of a violin. Searching for the sound, he spots a homeless man coaxing those beautiful sounds from a battered two-string violin. When the man finishes, Lopez compliments him briefly and rushes off to write about his newfound... Read More

Ways to Help the Homeless

Many of us have been confronted by the homeless.

But is it right to give a homeless person money? Although we'd like to be good samaritans, it may not be the best idea to give direct money to a homeless person. You really don't know what they're going to do with that money. It would be nice to think that in a perfect world, a homeless person would purchase food; however,... Read More

The jewelry that 'Elizabeth' made. The past couple weeks have been especially tough for 'Elizabeth'. Her boyfriend has not shown up during the weekends, even though he has promised twice, to take her to the zoo. This upset 'Elizabeth' quite a bit last Saturday, but this Saturday was different. This Saturday, she learned how to make jewelry with beads. She said that instead of waiting around for her... Read More

Another successful story

'Mike' is an immigrant to the United States. He came to the U.S. several years ago. Somewhere along the way he lost his permanent residency card. In order to apply for SSI benefits, get a Social Security card and do many other things, 'Mike' needed a replacement permanent resident card. To get a replacement card, he and I had to jump through many hoops and wait for... Read More

Update on Leonard

As of today, Leonard has been in his own apartment for about two and one half months. Quite an accomplishment for someone suffering from schizophrenia who is not taking any medication and who only has food stamps as a source of income. He is still keeping his apartment amazingly clean and has a great attitude. Life has not been without difficulties, however. This week... Read More

Easy Ways to Help the Homeless

Our country has seen some negative economic happenings in the past couple of years that has put even more of our people on the streets. Providing services for the homeless should not be a job only done by our government. As an individual, we each need to do our part to keep fewer homeless. The idea of a homeless shelter is only as good as the amount of people that it can... Read More

Life is going well

This week 'Elizabeth' accomplished quite a bit, despite a broken arm. She attended both of her group therapy classes, her individual counseling session, created a new case plan with her Magellan case manager and attended her monthly appointment with her probation officer. She also got some moderately good news from the Orthopedist, who said that she does not need surgery... Read More

Continental Golf Course in Scottsdale set up a great 9-hole “glow” course (big thanks to James and Steven for all your help) and our golfers tried their best to sink those putts.

Some adversity

While getting out of her new bed recently, 'Elizabeth' got her feet tangled up in her comforter and fell to the ground. She ended up breaking her arm on the fall. Despite tremendous pain and living on her own for the first time in her life, she figured out what she needed to do and called AHCCCS. She was then able to get a cab, courtesy of AHCCCS, and go to an urgent... Read More
