Leonard's story |

Leonard just turned 41 last month. That same month he moved into his own one bedroom apartment, thanks to a local agency that pays the rent for people who are like Leonard. Leonard has a rather severe developmental disability, combine that with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, it's no wonder Leonard has been homeless on and off for years. He says he was primarily raised by his grandparents who raised him well and let him work in their local grocery store. Leonard said that he never really knew his mom and dad. He also says that he made it to the 10th grade, but was only considered to be at a 3rd grade level in his academics. He has acknowledged his limitations in life, and also praises the things he does have in his life. One of those things is the bible. Leonard can quote scripture all day long, he says 'no one can beat me at the word'. He is constantly trying to understand why more people don't understand and follow the bible. In addition, to his skill of being able to recite several passages from the bible, he also says he has excellent boxing skills. He states that he has not boxed recently, but that when he did box he could beat Michael Carbajal. Again, Leonard likes to say 'no one on earth can beat me in boxing'. According to Leonard, he quit boxing because his grandparents asked him to. He says his grandparents were worried about him getting hurt. Nonetheless, to this day, Leonard loves to show some of his shadowboxing and his fast footwork, to anyone who is interested. Leonard has now been in his own apartment for almost two months. He's doing well and keeps his apartment sparkling clean. Despite his obstacles in life, Leonard remains optimistic about the future. He is hopeful that one day he will find a good woman with which he may share his life. This is one of his main goals in his life. Most days however, he is satisfied by much simpler endeavours. That is, he likes to watch TV and smoke. Currently, Leonard only has income through his food stamps. He has applied for General Assistance (GA), SSI and SSDI. The decision of whether or not he qualifies for GA should come in the next 30 days or so, the SSI/SSDI determination will probably take much longer. He will have to make sure, with my help, that he follows through on everything asked of him by the Social Security Administration, if he does, his case may be processed relatively quickly. If he does not, he may have to reapply and go through the process all over again. Things are looking for good for Leonard, although he has not been without tribulations. The first day he moved into his apartment, Leonard says he got beat up by some guys, who thought he was someone else. His bathroom mirror was broken and a few holes in the wall were made that day. Leonard has remained resilent through these problems and hopes to come out better for the experience.
