"Leonard" was recently denied General Assistance again, this time because he has yet to turn in his birth certificate or a copy of his ID card to DES. That makes eight months now since he first applied for General Assistance. The good news is, that he is allowed to appeal this decision and still turn in the required proof of identification by the time of his... Read More

Leonard and Elizabeth

'Leonard' moved into his new apartment a little over a week ago. It's in a much quieter neighborhood and is more nicely kept up. 'Leonard' likes it better than his old apartment, too. He especially likes that there is a Garcia's restaurant right across the street, as well as a Fry's and some other stores. His leg is healing, but he still uses a wheelchair to get... Read More

Evicted

'Leonard' was recently evicted from his apartment. It wasn't due to his lack of paying rent though, as a local agency pays for that, it was because of a confrontation he had with a couple of his neighbors.
One of the symptoms of 'Leonard's' mental illness involves him putting together words that don't follow normal patterns of grammar, but whose sounds often rhyme. He... Read More

Hope

Next week 'Elizabeth' has her court date to appeal the rejection of her SSI application. Considering the rejection was due to her not following up with the doctor's appointments required by the Social Security Administration and not a denial based on the severity or lack thereof of her disability, it is highly likely that now that she has proof from doctor's of her... The latest updates

  • 'Elizabeth' is in good spirits, as usual. She recently learned that the paperwork needed for her SSI appeal was given to her lawyer, from her mental health provider. Now that the lawyer has all the necessary paperwork, a court date has been set for late July. Before she attends the court date, she must prep for the case with her lawyer. Evaluations and some fish

'Elizabeth' has been waiting for some time now to get her SSI reinstated. According to her, its been almost three years since she started the process of re-applying for SSI. Her benefits were stopped in the first place, because she went to prison for a couple of years. Upon her release she was able to receive General Assistance, but that was set up as a temporary fix,... The jewelry that 'Elizabeth' made. The past couple weeks have been especially tough for 'Elizabeth'. Her boyfriend has not shown up during the weekends, even though he has promised twice, to take her to the zoo. This upset 'Elizabeth' quite a bit last Saturday, but this Saturday was different. This Saturday, she learned how to make jewelry with beads. She said that instead of waiting around for her... Read More

Update on Leonard

As of today, Leonard has been in his own apartment for about two and one half months. Quite an accomplishment for someone suffering from schizophrenia who is not taking any medication and who only has food stamps as a source of income. He is still keeping his apartment amazingly clean and has a great attitude. Life has not been without difficulties, however. This week... Read More

Some adversity

While getting out of her new bed recently, 'Elizabeth' got her feet tangled up in her comforter and fell to the ground. She ended up breaking her arm on the fall. Despite tremendous pain and living on her own for the first time in her life, she figured out what she needed to do and called AHCCCS. She was then able to get a cab, courtesy of AHCCCS, and go to an urgent... Read More

Elizabeth's story

Elizabeth (her name has been changed to protect her privacy) has been homeless off and on for most of her adult life. During her worst time she was living on the street, abusing drugs and prostituting herself.
Despite this sad story, what led up to her getting to this stage is even sadder.
Elizabeth's life got off to a rough start and not by her choice. According to her,... Read More
